Opportunity for 2 x Engineering Managers responsible for acting as the Intelligent Client for engineering design services. The roles will require experience of contract specification and management of contracts for engineering design development.

These exciting projects are currently at conceptial design phase and range across packaging design, transport system design, transport infrastructure design, mining engineering, tunnel underground construction and civil, mechanical and design.

Candidates with a background in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Mining or Tunnelling engineeringwill have relevant experince. Ideally one of the roles would benefit with a stong Civils background. Experience of working in a geological disposal, radioactive waste management or other nuclear context or on a major infrastructure project would be beneficial.

Qualifications and competence

Candidates will require 5+ years of experience in relevant areas of expertise and hold membership in a suitable professional body (either Chartered status or working towards Chartership).

The will be expected to demonstrate their competency in at least three of the competence areas outlined below.

Engineering Requirements Development

• Understanding of the fundamental design principles identified in skills required for Packaging, Transport System & GDF Design.

• Understanding of how the design requirements can be applied to a Specification for a GDF.

• Understanding of multi barrier concepts for a range of host geological environments.

Packaging Design

• Understanding of the fundamental principles of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, and how they can be applied to the design of waste packages for disposal of high activity wastes.

• Appreciation of multi barrier concepts for geological disposal.

• Proficient in handling and transfer systems for transport of waste packages to the GDF for disposal.

• Proficient in materials selection and performance for design and manufacture of waste packages.

• Proficient in waste package performance in normal and accidents conditions.

Transport System Design

• Understanding of the fundamental principles of Mechanical Engineering, and how they can be applied to the design of transport systems.

• Understanding of Regulatory requirements for safe transport radioactive wastes by road, rail and sea modes of transport

• Understanding of design requirements for transport infrastructure.

• Understanding of performance requirements of transport packages in normal and accident conditions.

Transport infrastructure design

• Understanding of the fundamental principles of transport infrastructure, and how they can be applied to the design of transport systems.

• Understanding of Regulatory requirements for safe transport of radioactive wastes by road, rail and sea modes of transport

• Understanding of requirements for transport packaging design.

Mining Engineering

• Understanding of the fundamental design principles of Mining Engineering, and how they can be applied to the design and construction of a GDF.

• Appreciation of multi barrier concepts for a range of host geological environments.

Tunnel / Underground Construction Engineering

• Understanding of the fundamental design principles of Tunnelling and Underground Construction, and how they can be applied to the design and construction of a GDF.

• Appreciation of multi barrier concepts for a range of host geological environments.

Construction, civil and structural engineering

• Understanding of the fundamental principles of Construction, Civil and Structural Engineering, and how they can be applied to the design and construction of a GDF.

• Understanding of Underground and surface construction, including requirements for infrastructure and seismic qualification.

• Appreciation of infrastructure and utility requirements for a GDF.

GDF Design - Mechanical Engineering

• Understanding of the fundamental principles of Mechanical Engineering, and how they can be applied to the design and operation of a GDF.

• Appreciation of multi barrier concepts for a range of geological environments.

• Appreciation of the requirements for a Operational safety case

• Understanding of Materials and methods of manufacture.

Engineering design data management

• Understanding of the fundamental principles of Engineering Design Data Management, and how they can be applied to the design and construction of a GDF.

• Proficient in Engineering Design Data Management systems.

• Understanding of data requirements.

Design process development and implementation

• Understanding of the fundamental principles of Engineering Design Processes, and how they can be applied to the design and construction of a GDF.

• Appreciation of multi barrier concepts for a range of geological environments.

• Understanding of Engineering Design process development and implementation for major projects.

Design tool development and implementation

• Understanding of the fundamental principles of Engineering Design Tools, and how they can be applied to the design and construction of a GDF.

• Appreciation of multi barrier concepts for a range of geological environments.

• Understanding of Engineering Design Tools development and implementation for major projects.

Container Design and Storage Conditions Evaluation Delivery

• Appreciation of the Disposability Assessment process.

• Proficient in the production of Container Design and Storage Conditions evaluations Under RWPR60-WI04 including providing a clear audit trail for the evaluation.

• Understanding of roles and responsibilities of waste package Design Authority.

• Proficiency in interpreting engineering drawings/designs, including Appreciation of relevant design standards.

• Understanding of design elements of the Waste Package Specifications, including robust containers.

• Appreciation of safety functions provided by the waste container and how these contribute to the overall GDF safety case, including influences of container design on integrity and accident performance.

• Understanding of industry guidance on storage, of influence of storage conditions on integrity and of the interpretation of proposed store conditions.

Concept Compatibility Evaluation Delivery

• Appreciation of the Disposability Assessment process.

• Proficient in the production of Concept Compatibility evaluations Under RWPR60-WI11 including providing a clear audit trail for the evaluation.

• Understanding of GDF concepts, including current illustrative reference designs.

• Proficient in developing new handling/emplacement arrangements and footprint evaluation in response to innovative packaging proposals.

• Understanding of providing cost estimates for new designs linked to innovative packaging proposals (note that the Proficiency is not always required and would be obtained through existing competence 124.02).

Background

Our clients mission is to deliver a geological disposal facility (GDF) and provide radioactive waste management solutions. The GDF will be a highly engineered facility capable of permanently isolating higher activity radioactive waste deep underground.

This is a high profile and complex project of national significance - vital for dealing with the UK’s nuclear legacy. We are seeking a talented and ambitious individual who has experience in developing underground design solutions in a safety critical environment with determination to tackle a range of engineering challenges.

RWM is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. A 2014 White Paper provides the Government’s framework for ‘Implementing Geological Disposal’. Identifying and developing a suitable site for a GDF is based on the principle of working with communities willing to participate in the process.

Joining us at a critical stage in the implementation process, you will have the opportunity to help shape our forward plans. Specifically, you will help develop our disposal system design capability as we move from a generic design phase into early stages of site specific design. You will be responsible for design assessments, undertaking feasibilities studies and the delivery of engineering design solutions. The role will include developing engineering design solutions for surface to underground connections and the underground layout and well as working arrangements for construction and interface with disposal operations. You will work closely with our contracting partners to specify work and manage the delivery of key elements of our programme.

You will play an important role in demonstrating the design and construction engineering of a GDF and contribute to the relationships that support working in partnership with communities interested in the GDF siting process.
