The Role

Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) is the wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, charged by Government with developing a geological disposal facility (GDF) for higher activity radioactive waste in the UK. A GDF is a series of vaults and tunnels deep underground where the waste can be put.

Communities will be at the heart of the Siting Process for a GDF and a facility will only be built where both a suitable site and a willing community can be found. The process of siting a GDF is open to any Interested Party – an individual or organisation – in England or in Wales. The Interested Party may come forward to hold initial discussions with RWM about an area of the country that they are proposing and what the process entails. If they do take their discussions forward, they will be asked to make their interest publicly known and enter into a formation of a Working Group.

RWM requires two Community Coordinator task based support roles until mid-March 2020 and very much likely beyond this date to ensure it has the capacity to meet the needs of any Working Groups which are formed over that period.

This role will involve lots of travelling and possible overnight stays. Company laptop and phone will be provided, expenses will be paid.

Key Accountabilities

• Support RWM community engagement leads to:

o work with Interested Parties to ‘go public’ and form Working Groups

o identify the independent support needs of Working Groups

o liaise with Principal Local Authorities

o support Independent Chairs and Facilitators of Working Groups

• Administrative tasks to ensure the day-to-day requirements of Working Groups are met e.g.:

o booking and confirming meeting venues and refreshments

o notifying attendees

o inviting RWM staff, at the direction of the community engagement lead

o preparing agendas and minutes for review by the community engagement lead

• Support for training and induction for Working Groups e.g.:

o liaison with training providers

o arranging venues and confirming arrangements

o arranging site visits within UK and internationally

o keeping training logs up to date

• Assisting in the management of RWM’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system e.g.:

o setting up new users

o managing password re-sets

o moderation of the discussions

o placing recommended content

o responding to queries or escalating them with the community engagement lead

o management of groups

o preventing duplication

• Liaising with RWM colleagues to provide responses to Working Groups and the wider community on any key issues e.g.:

o preparing presentations

o providing briefs for Working Group members

o following up on outstanding issues from a Working Group work plan

• Compiling and analysing data for RWM’s community engagement lead on the performance of a Working Group e.g.:

o meeting attendance levels

o planning engagement and communications activity

o procurement of services

o management information

• Supporting RWM’s community engagement lead to report progress of the Working Group to the wider organisation and NDA

• Regular attendance at meeting and events to build relationships with members of a Working Group and other local stakeholders

• Support RWM’s community engagement lead to deliver procurement activity and undertake budget management

• Champion personal safety behaviours and ensure processes are followed

• Champion inclusivity and embed within our ways of working

Key Requirements

• Educated to degree level

• Strong verbal and written communication skills,

• Ability to respect confidentiality,

• Strong customer service ethos,

• Strong numerical and analytical skills,

• Ability to manage time to meet external and internal deadlines,

• Ability to interact with staff internally and externally at all levels

• Good IT skills

• Practical experience of community engagement or how organisations can engage with local communities, political awareness and an appreciation of the workings of local and/or national government, practical competence in coordinating the delivery of services to communities, experience of managing third party contractors
