Responsible for leading and supporting a number of work packages and tasks within the Higher Activity Waste (HAW) programme supporting the Problematic Waste Integrated Project Team (PW IPT).
Directly reports to the Project Manager – PW IPT with no direct reports into this role.
Act as a member of PW IPT Core Team (alongside staff from the LLW Repository Ltd National Waste Programme)
Technical contribution to and delivery of PW IPT work packages and associated work tasks.
The Role Description
Technical contribution to and delivery of HAW Problematic Waste Integrated Project Team work tasks
Provision of technical input to the HAW programme, principally in the areas of opportunities related to improved management of problematic waste.
Fulfilling the role as a member of the PW IPT Core Team (supporting the delivery of the work programme in Financial Year 19/20 (FY19/20) and definition of the work programme for FY20/21-FY22/23
Provide technical support to the Project Manager – PW IPT as required.
Staff will manage:

In addition, he/she will undertake other activities commensurate with their skills and experience as and when required.
Qualifications / Skills
• Good first degree in science or engineering subject.
• Proven ability to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders and produce clear, concise written technical work that is appropriate for a range of audiences.
• Proven track record in ownership and delivery of work tasks.
• A pragmatic, problem-solving approach, in particular the ability to identify the key issues and distinguish the essential from the ‘nice to have’.
• Proven track record in working as a team.
• The ability to work on parallel tasks, often to tight deadlines.
• The role requires a working knowledge of:
o The inventory of higher activity wastes, including knowledge of the form, characteristics and hazards of the wastes, why some of these wastes are considered to be problematic and ongoing initiatives within the industry to address the issues.
o Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s (NDA’s) Direct Research Portfolio.
o The requirements for the management and geological disposal of radioactive wastes and materials.
In addition, some familiarity with the following is preferred:
o Current waste management plans and baselines across the estate (as detailed in Life Time Plans).
o RWM’s Letter of Compliance Process.
o NDA’s Strategy including the Higher Activity Waste Treatment Framework (2015), Integrated Waste Management principles (2016) and Radioactive Waste Strategy (2018)
o The NDA Value Framework and its application to radioactive wastes.
